Makers_Day_2015_Web01_600x400

Free and Open to the Public

CHICAGO—In honor of National Craft Month, a dozen makers and artisans will invite the public to get a behind-the-scenes glimpse at what they do at Maker’s Day: Watch. Make. Take! on Saturday, March 7 in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood. The artisans will explain the process behind their work, and many booths will give the public the chance to try it for themselves through “make ‘n’ take” projects. The sessions—from henna to chainmaille jewelry to 3D printing to lock picking—will run on a rotating schedule from 11 am through 5 pm at 1127 W Granville.  All activities are family-friendly and suitable for beginners.  Admission is free.  Most projects are free; a few have a modest fee to cover materials (under $5).

The event is sponsored by Blue Buddha Boutique, the largest brick-and-mortar store in the world dedicated to chainmaille. Blue Buddha specializes in teaching people of all ages how to weave modern versions of this  ancient art form. Their team of 18 employees serve customers in all 50 states and more than 40 countries. The company raises awareness of local, handmade goods and support Chicago crafters through Blue Buddha’s artisan market—featuring the work of more than 50 makers, designers and crafters—and the annual DIY Trunk Show in Edgewater.

Artisan Market Monday: Erika Kristen

Erika Kristen

Erika Kristen is a photojournalist and artist (not to mention, also an Inventory Specialist and B3 Liaison) from Chicago. Her portfolio from the past 15 years features everything from high-end table-top products to obscure art, though most of her experience is in the live concert arena. Musicians photographed over the years include Henry Rollins, Nine Inch Nails, Alice In Chains, Passion Pit and Of Monsters and Men.

Erika explained, “I document history. Every image has a story and more than likely, its one that you would never guess in a million years! My hope for each image I capture is to leave an indelible impression in one’s memory. Good, bad or indifferent. It strikes up conversation, it stirs the soul. Memory fades. An image lasts forever.”
